Highway 21 in Idaho closed due to snowfall and avalanche threat, alternate routes advised

Highway 21 will remain closed until experts determine it is safe to begin cleanup efforts, according to Idaho Transportation Department.

ITD says that depending on the weather, the avalanche team plans to drop explosives on Sunday within the 11 miles of avalanche paths along the highway. The closure is between Grandjean Junction and Banner Summit. No injuries were reported, though a truck was pushed by the initial avalanche.

State Highway 21 is closed in multiple areas on Friday.

There is a closure in both directions from mile marker 48, eight miles north of Idaho City, to mile marker 72 in Lowman. All lanes are closed, and motorists are asked to consider a different route.

Boise County Sheriff's Office reports crews are bringing in a rotary snow blower to try and clear the road. Snowmobilers can use the Granite Creek parking lot.

The sheriff's office asks drivers to go around closed barricades asthey could be subject to a misdemeanor fine and will be in the way of incoming road equipment.

There is an avalanche risk from milepost 93.7 to milepost 105.5, Grandjean to Banner Summit. The highway remains closed until further notice.
